Dr. Surinder Kapur

Dr. Surinder Kapur is the Founder Chairman of The Sona AutoComp Group, a USD 750 million with plants India, Germany and USA. He is regarded as a pioneer in the Indian Automobile Components manufacturing industry? 

The  Sona Group started in 1987 and today consists of, manufacturing companies across the globe including the world’s Largest Precision Forging company (Sona BLW). The Group focuses on the Steering and Drive Line Assembly business. 

 

Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd., the flagship company of the Sona Group, is a joint venture with JTEKT Corporation of Japan. It is the largest steering systems supplier in India and the only one supplying Electronic Power Steering Systems. In 1997, the World Economic Forum recognized it as a top –performing Global Growth Company and is a recipient of the prestigious Deming Award in 2003 and the TPM Excellence Award in 2008 – the second company in the country to have achieved these dual distinctions.

Dr. Kapur is true visionary of the manufacturing industry and has led the TPM movement in CII, as Chairman of the TPM Club f India. 

He is a member of the National Manufacturing Competativness Council of India. 

 

In 2008 Dr.Kapur took the Sona Group global by acquiring ThyssenKrupp’s precision forging business and creating the world’s largest precision forging group – Sona BLW.

 

Extremely aware of his societal duties – he is leading the way on the Sustainability Initiative of the Sona Group and received the TERI Corporate Award for ‘Environmental Excellence’ for the year 2006 – 2007. The Sona Group has partnered with an ITI in Nagina, Haryana and has made a great impact on the skill development of students for Industrial Employment.

 

He currently serves as the Chairman of CII Country Committee in Germany and has been the Chairman of the “Skill Council” set up by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and was recently awarded the CII President’s Award for contribution in Mission for “Innovation in Manufacturing” for the year 2006 – 2007. He is a member of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council and is a member of the CII International Council for Japan (Jan 2007 ~ March 2008). He was a Member of the Automotive Mission Plan (2006-2016) set up by Ministry of Heavy Industry, Government of India and the Task Force on Skill Development, constituted by the Planning Commission, Government of India. He has recently been appointed on the Indo German 

Consultative Group by the Government of India.

 

Dr. Kapur completed his Bachelors, Masters & PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1971 and is the recipient of the MSU Distinguished Alumni Award from the Michigan State University Alumni Association. He currently lives between his two homes in New Delhi and Mumbai. A deeply spiritual person Dr. Kapur enjoys reading and spending time with his grandchildren.
