Dr. Samir K.
Brahmachari former Professor, IISc, Bangalore; Founder-Director, CSIR-Institute
of Genomics and Integrative Biology, (CSIR-IGIB) Delhi; is currently the
Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and
Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Scientific and Industrial
Research.
He pioneered the functional genomics initiative in India and also led the Indian
Genome Variation Consortium project as the Director, CSIR-Institute of Genomics
and Integrative Biology, which created a new national resource: the genetic
profile of the people of India. Prof. Brahmachari has more than 150 research
publications, 12 patents and 23 software copyrights to his credit. He is the
chief mentor and proponent of the Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) project for
infectious diseases, a CSIR-led team-India consortium with global partnership.
He conceptualized and developed ahead of time novel Public-Private Partnership
(PPP) models like Genomed, TCGA involving pharmaceuticals and life science
companies and CSIR institutions. He has also been instrumental in creating
Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) by leveraging the
infrastructure and scientific strength of CSIR.
He served as a member of the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) Council
(2004-2011) and as a member of expert group on Human Rights and Biotechnology
Commission of United Nations. Currently, he is a member of the Advisory Board of
the X Prize in Genomics. He is a recipient of many prestigious awards including
the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Memorial Award, J.C. Bose Medal, Millennium Medal,
FICCI Award, Ranbaxy Research Award, H.K. Firodia Award, B.R. Ambedkar Centenary
award for Biomedical Research etc. He is also a recipient of five D.Sc (Honaris
Causa) from various universities of India. He is also a Fellow of all the four
national Academies of S&T and Engineering in India.
